Pella Christian Cross Country Runner Builds Remarkable Comeback Story

A compelling storyline for the Pella Christian cross country team this fall has been the path of girls’ runner Marina Shannon. After returning from injury just over two weeks ago, Shannon has willed herself to the front of the Lady Eagles squad, culminating in a team-best 30th overall finish in the Little Hawkeye Conference meet on Monday.
Shannon’s entire season has been quite the story, beginning with a late decision to join the team after logging just 11 miles all summer, to a bizarre knee injury that required surgery and prevented her from engaging in any aerobic activity for three weeks, and now to her improbable rise to the top of the girls’ team.
Head coach Jocelyn Meinders says Shannon’s development has been one of the great surprises of the season.
“It’s just been really unexpected for everyone; and I’ve talked with her about it too –she is having a really good season now and she is so excited for next season,” said Meinders. “She’s looking forward to logging her summer miles and just really get prepared. Next year she’s going to be quite the force, I think.”
The Pella Christian girls cross country team is back in action today in Chariton for one final tune-up before next week’s Regional meet.
