Pella Corporation will close its manufacturing plant in Columbia, South Carolina at the end of the year. While nothing that drastic will happen locally, Pella spokesperson Kathy Krafka-Harkema says they’re looking at a variety of ways to keep as many people employed as possible in Pella. She says that could include offering incentives for early retirement or voluntarily leaving the workforce. Harkema cites a drop in new home construction of more than 70% since 2006 as the reason behind the plant closure and the possible downsizing of the workforce.
