Approximately 100 interested individuals gathered at the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum Friday evening to listen to presentations by VA representatives as well as members of the Knoxville Veterans Alliance.
In response to audience questions, VA officials assured the public that a community based out-patient clinic will remain in Knoxville, and stated that they hoped to have the lease transfer in place by December.
They also told the audience that while the grounds would be exempt from taxation, the value of the buildings would be subject to property taxes and businesses would pay appropriate sales taxes.
James Washington and Aubrey Wilson, with the Veterans Alliance shared details of their plans for the development of the VA, stating that multiple colleges have expressed interest.
Bob Baker, Director of the Knoxville Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum says that the museum is interested in using storage facilities on the campus. Brian Stickel with the Knoxville Raceway discussed the possibility of using part of the grounds for camping during race season.
KNIA/KRLS reported early yesterday that the Knoxville Historic Preservation Commission had received word that the VA was planning to nominate the campus to the National Register of Historic Places. James Washington told KNIA/KRLS that this was a positive development in that with the nomination tax credits become available.
