The Iowa Department of Public Heath reported yesterday that the first case of listeriosis associated with recalled cantaloupes has been confirmed in the state. It occurred in a Northwest Iowa women, and is has been linked with the Rocky Ford-brand cantaloupes from a farm in Colorado. Judy Van Hulzen, a nurse at Marion County Public Health, says that listeriosis can occur even in refrigerated products. She says some basic preventative measures are to peel your fruit and vegetables and wash them thoroughly, and to keep your cooked foods away from uncooked foods, particularly meats.
