The first contest of the season for the Pella High girls basketball team is tonight, and sends the Lady Dutch on the road to take on a familiar – and very difficult – opponent. Pella hits the road to Huxley to face Ballard, a team that has been among the elite 3A programs over the past several seasons.

“They’re going to be really good. They always have been. [They have] really good guards, [they’re] quick, good defensive pressure, and they have a nice post player,” says Pella head coach Jerod Garland. “They do have a new coach this year, but it’s somebody who’s been in the system a long time, and probably played a big part in their success. We’re not expecting any huge changes from them, but they’ll be good.”

The Pella girls went 19-4 last season, but feature an entirely new starting lineup for the 2011-2012 season, after losing six seniors to graduation.
