Pella Regional Health Center has performed a new surgical procedure with the da Vinci surgical robot. General surgeon Dr. Matt Morgan is the first surgeon in Iowa to use the device in a single incision cholecystectomy earlier this month. The da Vinci robot offers several advantages over traditional surgery, such as less infection risk, less blood loss, and therefore less need for blood transfusions. Currently, Pella Regional Health Center is the only Hospital in the state that has a da Vinci robotic surgery system. A Cholecysectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder, a common treatment for treating gallstones. Pella Regional Health Center installed the da Vinci robot in march of 2010, and performers various surgeries with the device.
