A heart-breaking 3-2 loss in Tuesday night’s Class 2A Regional Final left the Pella Christian volleyball team short of their goal of a return trip to the State Volleyball Tournament, but by no means did it devalue what the Lady Eagles had accomplished this season. Head coach Cindy Nikkel said the team met on Wednesday to get some closure on the year and evaluate what came out of the fall for the girls on the team.
“The biggest thing that I think we [coaches] needed to know from them – and to make sure they understood – was that if this season was only about getting to State, then the season was basically a wash; but was that really how the felt,” said Nikkel.
“Was there joy in the journey? Did they love and go after each day as it came through? Every one of them nodded their head ‘yes’ and some verball said, ‘yes, it was a great season, Coach!'”
Pella Christian went 28-5 overall this fall in Nikkel’s first year as head coach.
