The Twin Cedars girls basketball team got the new season off to a solid start last night at home, while the boys played well, but couldn’t keep pace with Wayne.

The girls trailed by four at halftime, but overcame a weak second quarter to mount a strong showing in each of the final two frames to claim a 50-45 victory. Alee Hugen put together a big night for the Sabers, pouring in 21 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Brittney Roby also came up big on the glass, adding another 13 rebounds and putting up nine points.

In the boys’ contest, the Sabers were looking to improve on a very lopsided loss to Wayne last year, and played much better in a 75-59 loss. Despite trailing 51-39 entering the fourth quarter, the Sabers stayed resilient, outscoring Wayne 20-8 in the final period. Hunter Embray’s 18 points led the Twin Cedars offensive attack, and freshman Otis Roby added 13.

Both Twin Cedars teams return to action on Friday with a pair of contests against Albia.
