Just one more day of practice remains in the long layoff that the Pella High boys basketball team has had to endure since their win over Knoxville more than a week ago. Little Dutch head coach Mark Core says while the long break between games has been less than ideal, it has provided his team with an opportunity to work on a key attribute of successful basketball programs.
“Our rebounding has to be better, both offensively and defensively. I think of the two, if I had to pick one, [it would be] our defensive rebounding, just because of the size differential we’re going to have with most teams,” said Core. “Unlike previous years, where maybe we just had someone who could go up and grab rebounds because of their height or superior jumping ability, our guys are going to have to rebound as a result of position.”
Core adds that the team also continues to focus on improving their rotations in the full-court trap defense. The Pella boys are 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the Little Hawkeye Conference entering tomorrow’s home game against Newton.
