Austin Vermeer put up 20 points and pulled down 9 rebounds, as the Pella Christian boys basketball team knocked-off Class 2A No.1-ranked PCM Thursday night in Monroe.

The Eagles crashed the offensive boards right from the get-go, helping them get out to an 18-15 first quarter lead. The game remained close through the second quarter, with Pella Christian holding a narrow 29-28  lead at the half.

The Mustangs rode the hot shooting of Scott Bruxvoort to go on a 12-4 run in the third quarter and take a six-point lead, but Pella Christian rallied to pull within one point entering the final quarter.  The two teams again battled back and forth in the fourth quarter, but with a narrow lead in the closing minutes, PCM was forced to foul Pella Christian to try and get the ball back, and the Eagles were able to close out the game at the free-throw line.

Bruxvoort scored 32 points to lead the Mustangs, but the rest of the team struggled to find their shots, as Sean O’Connor was the second-leading scorer with 7 points.  Complimenting Vermeer’s 20-point performance were fellow Pella Christian post players Caleb Van Weelden and Zach Veenstra, who scored 7 and 10 points, respectively.

The win moves Pella Christian to 3-1 overall this season, with the Eagles back in action on Saturday against Albia.  PCM suffers their first loss of the season and slips to 4-1 overall.  The Mustangs will try and rebound Friday night with a Heart of Iowa Conference contest at Roland-Story.
