Defense was the name of the game in Knoxville last night, as Pella Christian’s girls and boys basketball teams each forced the host Panthers into too many turnovers, claiming 68-18 and 61-35 victories, respectively.

Only one player reached double figures, but the Lady Eagles had eleven players notch two points or more in the scorebook in the opener, shutting down Knoxville in the first half and cruising to a fifty-point win.

Beyond Cali Vink’s game-high 10 points, teammate Tayler Stursma put together a strong, all-around performance, posting 9 points and 9 rebounds. Ellie Hawkshead was one of three Knoxville players to notch 4 points, as she also pulled down six rebounds to lead Knoxville.

The win moves the Pella Christian girls to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the Little Hawkeye Conference; while Knoxville slips to 0-7 on the season and 0-2 in league play.

The boys game played out a bit differently, as the host Panthers battled to a competitive 29-18 score at halftime, but Pella Christian pulled away with a 16-3 third quarter run to earn the 61-35 win.

Blake Riggen led a balanced Eagle offense with 13 points, while Caleb Van Weelden chipped in 10 more points and also pulled down 5 rebounds.  Knoxville’s top scorer was Jake Stearns, who came off the bench to put up 10 points – all in the fourth quarter.

The Pella Christian boys have now won five straight since losing their season-opener, and travel to Grinnell on Friday.  The Knoxville boys remain in pursuit of that elusive first victory at 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.
