A commitment to defense has led the Pella High girls basketball team to back-to-back victories, and has the Lady Dutch off to a 1-0 start in the Little Hawkeye Conference.
Putting the majority of the effort into stopping the opposition isn’t always an easy concept to sell a basketball team – particularly at the high school level – but Pella head coach Jerod Garland says his team has bought in to the “defense first” mentality.
“This is a group that really wants to make it tough for teams. They want to pester teams, and they have a relentless attitude about them,” says Garland. “It makes it really fun to coach, and it’s my whole roster, so that’s been very pleasing.”
The Pella High girls basketball team carries a 2-2 overall record into Knoxville Friday night.
