Swarming defensive pressure and balanced scoring distribution pushed the Pella High girls and boys basketball teams to lopsided victories over Newton last night by the scores of 61-28 in the girls’ contest and 56-25 in the boys’ game.
In the opener, the Pella girls put the game away by halftime, outscoring the Cardinals 18-2 in the second frame to lead 34-10 at intermission. Regan Cooper was dominant in the post, scoring 21 points and pulling down 7 rebounds, while Bailey Vande Weerd connected for 10 points from the perimeter.
The victory was the fifth in a row for the Pella girls basketball team, as the Lady Dutch enter the holiday break with a 5-2 overall record and a 3-0 mark in Little Hawkeye Conference play.
The nightcap played out much the same, as the defensive pressure for the Little Dutch forced Newton into 27 turnovers. Pella jumped out to a quick 19-7 lead through one quarter, and continued to spread the gap as the game wore on.
The offensive attack for the Little Dutch was incredibly well-balanced, with Jace Ver Steeg’s 8 points serving as the high scorer and nearly every Varsity player notching at least one field goal.
The 56-25 win improves the Pella boys to 3-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference. League play starts up right out of the holiday break, as the Pella High basketball teams will host Oskaloosa on Tuesday, January 3rd.
