Pleasantville Basketball Sweeps Wayne

Pleasantville swept a Varsity girls and boys basketball doubleheader at home with Wayne last night to give the girls their first win of the season, and keep the Trojan boys unbeaten on the season.

The Pleasantville girls staged a 16-point comeback in the second quarter to take a two-point lead into the intermission, then shut down the Falcons in the third quarter to seize control of the game and earn a 46-30 win.

“We made a couple of adjustments, made a couple changes on defense, [and] rotated in a couple different girls that hadn’t seen as much playing time, and they really got after it,” said Pleasantville girls head coach Trevor Miller.

“I said I was looking for a spark, and those girls came in and basically shut them [Wayne] down. They [Wayne] only had eight points in the second half – and five of those were in the last minute of the game – so it was great defense from the second through fourth quarter.”

Senior Kennedy Core led the Trojan offense with 15 points, as the Pleasantville girls improved to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the Pride of Iowa Conference.

The boys game featured a pair of unbeaten squads, but Pleasantville gained the upper hand in the second quarter and never let go; as the Trojans claimed a 71-57 victory. Head coach Tom Wilkins says Pleasantville’s success lies in a simple formula.

“I tell the guys every night, ‘if we come and do what I know we can do, we should be ok,’” said Wilkins. “We shouldn’t have to worry about the other team. [If] we take care of ourselves, good things will happen.”

The Trojan boys continued to see big performances out of Hunter Van Haalen and Collin Thomas, as they scored 24 and 21 points, respectively. Pleasantville is off to a 5-0 start to the season and a 2-0 mark in the conference.

Both teams hit the road on Friday night to face Martensdale-St. Mary’s.
