With every new sports season in each year there is often a new group of seniors who are called on to lead in a capacity of which they were likely not asked to in prior years. At Pella High, head boys basketball coach Mark Core says this season’s upperclassmen have really grown as leaders.
“We have ‘senior leaders’ rather than captains. We’re trying to widen the circle of influence as much as possible; allowing the guys to develop leadership within the context of their personalities, and I think each and every one of them are making strides,” said Core.
“A year ago when we’d have team meetings, the kids who were juniors last year – seniors this year – were pretty quiet, pretty passive; and now when we open topics of discussion to the team, they chime right in with their opinions.”
The Little Dutch have won all three of their Little Hawkeye Conference games so far, and continue league play on Tuesday, January 3rd against Oskaloosa.
