One half of subpar basketball led to the undoing of the Central College women’s and men’s basketball teams in their respective games Saturday, as the women were defeated 60-45 and the men came up just short – 56-53 – in an Iowa Conference doubleheader with the University of Dubuque.

The Central women played well in the first half, trailing the Spartans by just a point at intermission, but went cold in the second half; scoring only 15 points in the final 20 minutes.  Kelsey Schuring was the high-scorer for Central with 10 points, as the Dutch slipped to 5-13 overall and 0-9 in the Iowa Conference.

The events played out in reverse for the Central men, as the Dutch started out slow, but opened the second half with a 14-2 run, and pushed Dubuque to the final possessions before falling just short at the end.  Jack Bruns scored 14 points, and Demarco Turner tallied 12 to lead the Central offense.

The loss is the fourth straight for the Dutch, with Dubuque book-ending both sides of the slump.  The Central men are now 12-5 overall and 5-4 against Iowa Conference opponents.  Both Central College basketball teams resume league play on Wednesday at Coe College.
