The Knoxville Girls Basketball Squad can say they are now on a winning streak after a 48-44 overtime win over Grinnell last night. The girls made the 2012 inductees to the Knoxville Athletic Hall of Fame wait an extra few minutes for their ceremony. The two teams played within three-to-seven points of each other the entire game but Grinnell grabbed the lead with just over a minute to play. Ellie Hawkshead laid in a basket with ten seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 40 and send the game into an extra session. There, Knoxville was able to get stops when needed and knock down just enough free throws to ice the game. Coach Jim Utiermarkt while happy with the win, was baffled how his team was outrebounded by such a wide margin and still managed to win. Meredith Cunningham led two Knoxville players in double figures with 19 points and Hanna Rosenkranz had 13. Knoxville is 3-13 on the season and 1-7 in Little Hawkeye Conference play. The boy’s game was an entirely different story. Knoxville was keeping up with Grinnell for the first quarter with the Tigers holding an 11-8 lead. Soon after the second stanza began, Grinnell broke the game open with an 11-1 run and never looked back in a 60-27 win. Knoxville was led by Gerritt Davis who scored eight points. Knoxville drops to 1-15 on the season and 0-8 in the conference.
