Iowa Senator Paul McKinley and Representative Jim Van Jim Van Engelenhoven visited Knoxville and Pella Friday afternoon for their first monthly Legislative coffee sessions. Both legislators discussed some of the hot button issues at the Capital, including education, property tax reform, mental health, the gas tax and condition of rural roads, and traffic cameras. Both Republicans discussed a need to lower property taxes on commercial properties, saying it keeps businesses from prospering in the state. They each also spoke about the need to keep mental health services local so people understand who they’re caring for.
