The PCM boys basketball team raced out to a 35-11 first quarter lead on their way to a dominant 81-40 victory in Tuesday night’s Class 2A District Final in Ottumwa. As impressive as the 41-point victory was, it may have come at a cost, as leading scorer Scott Bruxvoort went down with an ankle injury at the very end of that opening quarter, and did not return to the game. Even without their leading scorer, PCM managed to extend their lead to 34 points by halftime, and eventually initiated the 35-point rule in the fourth quarter to quickly close out the game.

“Our kids got off to just a great start; really had a good first quarter shooting the basketball,” said PCM head coach Fred Lorensen. “When we shoot the basketball like that, we’re pretty good.”

Bruxvoort was on pace to have a big night before the injury, scoring 13 points in an opening period that saw PCM light up Davis County from every spot on the floor, shooting a blistering 82 percent from the field. They would finish the game converting on 33-of-47 shots (65%) and putting 10 players in the scoring column. Nate VandeWall had 17 points, and Jordan Van Roekel was close behind with 16 – also tallying 7 rebounds. Van Roekel said it was great to see his teammates recognize their opportunities and get off to the start they did.

“To start the game, they [Davis County] were sagging of Sean [O’Connor] and Hutch [Burns] pretty good, and Sean just noticed they were stepping off, and he was just draining threes,” said Van Roekel. “Hutch made a three, Nate [VandeWall] was in their, Dillon [Bruxvoort] was in there, I mean everyone was hitting just everything – Scott [Bruxvoort] – it was just amazing to watch, really.”

The win extends PCM’s win streak to 17 games, as they are now 21-2 on the season. They’ll face West Marshall on Saturday in Ankeny in a Class 2A Substate Final. The Trojans defeated North Polk Tuesday night 52-43. Scott Bruxvoort’s status for Saturday’s game is currently unknown.
