Knoxville Middle School recognized the local winners for the River of Words competition during an assembly Wednesday afternoon. Scott Molloy took first place in the art competition. Colby DeRaad finished second, and Eliza Eckart finished third. Receiving honorable mentions in art were Brandie Kirkwood, Charity Rouser, Megan McClain, and Nakara Keegel.

In the poetry competition, Megan McClain took first. Scott Malloy finished second, and Caleab Stivers-Fulley took third. Receiving honorable mentions in poetry were Emma Clodfelter and Tyra Villalobos. The children finishing first through third in each competition received gift certificates from The Next Chapter in Knoxville.

River of Words is an organization that teaches literacy through art and poetry. Their annual poetry and art competition is the largest of its kind in the world. It seeks to improve literacy, enhance investigation and critical thinking, and nurture creativity.
