Competing against larger teams in the Little Hawkeye Conference is certainly difficult for the Pella Christian girls track and field team, but it’s a challenge the team welcomes and appreciates when it comes to preparation for the postseason. Kevin Herdegen, head coach of the Lady Eagles, says with conference powers like Pella, Knoxville and Grinnell frequently at the same meets as his squad, his team understands that they can compete in some events and simply may not have the depth for others. Still, he says the team is committed to charting improvements on a weekly basis.

“We always start our week out by handing out awards for individual improvements – whether that’s a season-best or personal-best for their career. We see everything as just trying to get a little bit better every day,” said Herdegen. “We recognize that success is not always in first and second-place finishes and medals and trophies; we want all of our girls to – whatever they do – try and get a little bit better.”

The Lady Eagles get their first test on the track in less than a week, competing on March 27th at Chariton.
