After cruising to an 8-0, six-inning win in the opener, the Central College softball team combined two big hits, aggressive baserunning and a squeeze bunt for a 3-2 walk-off victory to complete a sweep of the University of Dubuque Monday. Pitchers Brie Haycraft and Rhianna Fleetwood earned the wins, while freshman hurler Mallory Schulenberg provided solid relief in the circle for the Dutch.
The two wins came with some disappointing news, though, as junior catcher Caitlyn Meyer was injured rounding third base late in the first game. She was sidelined for the rest of the day and likely indefinitely. Central is now 23-5 overall and 4-2 in the Iowa Conference. After an intense stretch of doubleheaders in the past week, the Dutch get a little time off before returning to action on Saturday in Waverly against Wartburg College.
