Central Men Hit Career-Bests at Day One of Jim Duncan Invitational

Central College senior Phil Miller launched a career-best mark to win the shot put at the Jim Duncan track and field Invitational Friday evening. The Dutch posted three additional personal bests against teams from NCAA Division I, II and III. Miller recorded a mark of 50 feet, 11.5 inches to win the event title. Steven Messerschmidt took runner-up honors at 49-1.75, also a personal best.

Ethan Miller had the top Division III mark in the high jump, finishing fourth (6-4.75) and Eric Larson followed in fifth (6-2.75). Matt Strey placed fourth in the triple jump and Andrew Hamer recorded a career best in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossing the line in 9:55.4 to finish fifth. In the distance events, Eli Horton took sixth in the 5,000 meters. Brandon Clough placed fourth with a personal best in the 10,000 meters, finishing in 33:02.4, while Tim Shepard – a freshman from Knoxville – followed in fifth (33:50.64).

On the women’s side, Shelby Mendoza and Mel McDermott placed 13th and 14th, respectively, in the 5,000 meters and Jessy Stika placed eighth in the discus. The two-day meet wraps up today. College events are slated to begin at 10 a.m. with the discus.
