A six-game losing skid to open the season was mercifully ended Monday night by the Pella Christian girls soccer team, and now the Lady Eagles are hopeful their win over Centerville can serve as a turning point for the season. Helping give Pella Christian a chance in every competition they’re in has been their defense. Head Coach Bill Collman says the consistent play of defenders Kylie Lamb and Shelby Sytsma have been helpful to everyone on the team, particularly goalkeeper Jenna Roose.

“Shelby has been the center of our defense the last three years. She’s very quick in the back, reads the rotation well, and is very adept at clearing the ball the first time – whether she’s facing the ball, sideways, whatever,” said Collman. “Kylie has just had a great season so far in her senior year. She’s always been a solid competitor for us, but she’s really stepped up and been a key defender for us. We’re very comfortable back there [on defense], now we just have to find somebody to spark the offense.”

The Pella Christian girls soccer team faces Chariton this evening in a JV/Varsity doubleheader that begins at 5:00 p.m. in Chariton.
