Governor Terry Branstad has ordered all flags in the state to be flown at half-staff todayin honor of Sergeant 1st Class Edris “Eddie” Viers of Swan. Viers is a Korean War soldier who died in combat and whose remains are being laid to rest in Swan. He was last seen in 1950 at the Battle of Bloody Gulch, but his remains were not recovered at his time.

Unknown remains were recently exhumed at a military cemetery in Hawai’i for reanalysis. They were identified as that of Viers. Those remains were flown into Iowa Tuesday and were escorted to Pleasantville. A memorial service will be held for Viers at Mason Funeral Home in Pleasantville at noon. Burial, with full military honors accorded by the United States Army, will take place at the Swan Cemetery following the memorial service. Visitation is from 11am to noon.
