Local golfing standout Lucas Boyd of Pella put pen to paper Wednesday evening at the Bos Landen Golf Club in Pella, securing his plans to play college golf this fall at AIB in Des Moines.

“Everything just kind of lined up with what I wanted to do,” said Boyd. “Academically, it’s business, that’s what I want to do. On the golf side, it’s an up-and-coming program that I think I have the ability to help jumpstart. With the returning players and maybe some of the incoming [recruits], I think it’s something that will be fun for the next four years.”

The senior leader for the Little Dutch was joined in making his decision official by Eagles’ head golf coach Tony Giannetto and Pella High boys coach Bob Fessler; along with parents Bob and Julie Boyd, and Bos Landen Golf Pro and General Manager Scott Reuter. Giannetto says the opportunity to get Boyd on the team is something he wasn’t even sure would happen.

“I’m very excited about Lucas coming on board. We have a nice nucleus coming back, but I think we’ve been missing a player of Lucas’s caliber,” said Giannetto. “When his name was brought to us, we didn’t know for sure if we’d even have a chance at him, but we’re very fortunate to have him. I think he’s going to be a good fit.”

Boyd has been a dependable leader for Pella High this season, averaging a nine-hole score of 36 so far. He’ll join a familiar face – Pella High graduate Ben Fessler – on the AIB team later this year. First, though, Boyd has his senior campaign to finish up. Pella High hosts a quad on Friday at Bos Landen Golf Club that also includes the boys golf team from Knoxville.
