It’s crucial that children learn literary skills at a very young age. That’s what Stepping Stones director Pam Mahoney says as the Week of the Young Child nears its end. This year’s theme is “Early Years are Learning Years.” Mahoney tells KNIA/KRLS News that they use hands-on activities to develop children’s foundations in literacy. She says that children who are exposed at early ages to those environments with enriched vocabulary often have a head start when starting school compared to those who aren’t. The Week of the Young Child was established in 1971 as a way to focus public attention on the needs of young children and families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.
