The No. 1 doubles team from Pella High begins competition in the Class 1A Boys Individual State Tennis Meet today. Senior Brannon Johnson and sophomore David Lapthorn are one of 16 doubles teams competing for the state title. The duo enters the meet as one of eight District champions and have only been beaten once this season – in the season opener by a tandem from Boone that is also in the tournament.
Johnson reached the State Meet on a different doubles team a season ago, and says he’s looking forward to another opportunity to compete at the highest level.
“Being there last year, I kind of know what it’s going to entail and a little bit of what it takes to compete there,” said Johnson. “It’s definitely going to be different with an all-new partner – David – and just a great way to end a pretty fun senior year. Hopefully we can go out with a bang.”
The Class 1A Boys Individual State Tennis Meet begins at approximately 9:00 a.m. this morning at the Byrne’s Park Tennis Complex in Waterloo.
