KNIA/KRLS brings you severe weather coverage to keep you safe when strong thunderstorms and tornadoes hit our area. But we rely on information from the National Weather Service among other groups to bring you the information you need to know during severe weather. The National Weather Service is facing potential funding cuts in the future, and that affects more than just severe weather coverage. State Climatologist Harry Hillaker says our historical weather information that makes up the backbone of climatology models comes from the National Weather Service as well. Cuts to the National Weather Service may not only decrease warning times of severe weather, but also harm the weather predictions that help you plan your day.
