Pella Boys Claim LHC Tennis Crown; Knoxville Girls Surprise Field

Monday’s Little Hawkeye Conference girls and boys tennis tournaments certainly featured some surprising outcomes, particularly on the girls’ side – where Grinnell knocked off defending champion Pella Christian – while the Pella High boys’ road to victory was unexpectedly lopsided.

In the girls’ standings, Pella Christian finished with 34 points, 10 behind Grinnell. Just as much of a surprise was the Knoxville girls finishing in third place with 32 points, while the Pella High girls finished lower than expected at 7th place with 19 points.

Knoxville’s decision to stack their doubles teams was key, as the Panthers’ team of Emily Lee and Kassie Griggs was victorious in Flight One doubles, and teammates Paige Spowart and Taylor Carter claimed the top spot in Flight Two doubles. Pella Christian’s points came from a trio of third-place finishes and one fourth place finish. The top finish for the Pella High girls came in the form of a fourth-place finish by Morgan Ernst at Flight Two singles.

On the boys’ side, Pella looked dominant, winning three out of the four flights and earning second in the other. Jamison Roozeboom earned the Little Hawkeye Conference crown at Flight Two singles, while the tandems of Brannon Johnson and David Lapthorn, and Tom Palmer and Aaron Van Maanen were too strong for the opposition, as they also earned league titles.

The Knoxville boys finished in 6th place in the team standings, led by a fourth place finish in Flight One singles by Brandon Iddings, while Pella Christian took seventh behind the duo of Nick Dahm and Micah Zantingh.
