A repeat State Title performance from PCM’s Jordan Van Roekel in the Class 2A 400 Meter Hurdles got the second day of the 2012 Coed State Track and Field Championships off to a great start for the Marion County-area athletes in the field.  Van Roekel crushed his previous best time by running a 52.26 and setting the stage for a strong day for the PCM senior.

Other strong performances from the morning were turned in by Pella High’s Lydia Van Ee in the 400 Meter Hurdles and her teammates on the 4×200 Meter Relay team; with both claiming third-place finishes.  Capping off the top finishes in Friday’s finals were the Pella High boys Distance Medley Relay team – who finished fifth – and the sixth-place finish by Knoxville’s Ryan Douglas in the 400 Meter Hurdles.

The day also featured multiple preliminary races, with several area athletes and relay teams earning spots in the finals for Championship Saturday.  Topping the list was the Pella Christian girls 4×100 Meter Relay team, which clocked a season’s best 50.07 – the top time in the Class 2A field. Other qualifiers for today’s finals included Pella’s Jace Versteeg in the 110 Meter Hurdles, Marielle Gaiser of Pella in the 100 Meter Hurdles, the Pella High girls 4×100 Meter Relay, the PCM, Knoxville and Pella High boys in the 4×100 Meter Relay and the PCM and Knoxville Boys in the 4×400 Meter Relay.

Four of the local teams are also making ripples in the team standings.  In Class 3A girls, Pella High has 12 points to share the No. 11 spot with Mount Vernon/Lisbon.  On the boys’ side in Class 2A, PCM sits in 9th place with 15 points, while Pella High and Knoxville are close together in the Class 3A race with 16 and 13 points, respectively, which puts the Little Dutch in 10th and the Panthers in a tie with Waverly-Shell Rock for 12th.
