An outstanding match-up between a pair of top ten programs in Class 2A unfolded on the diamond in Prairie City last night, as PCM was edged out 3-1 in nine innings by North Polk.
Alex DeWitte provided a strong start on the mound for PCM, allowing just one earned run on seven hits and two walks, with four strikeouts in five innings of work. After the Comets scored early, Bryce Wignall sent Jordan Van Roekel home on one of his two hits on the night to tie the game at 1-1. That score would hold for five scoreless innings until North Polk put up two runs in the ninth and held out for the victory.
Joel Wiggins was on the mound for PCM in the later innings, finishing a four-inning stretch with three hits and three walks allowed, while striking out seven Comet batters. The hard-fought loss drops the PCM baseball team to 18-7 overall and 11-5 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.
