The Melcher-Dallas softball team is scheduled to open the first day of a two-day tournament at Murray today, which likely means an opportunity to work on the depth of the Saints’ pitching rotation. Melcher-Dallas head coach Jim Crozier says while the lion’s share of the starts this season will go to veteran hurler Lexi Crozier, he’s got some additional arms who have seen – or will see – some action this season.

“We are trying to develop a couple of younger pitcher. Mackenzie Suntken has been throwing some for us, as a sophomore, and Sam Clark – who’s a freshman – is also throwing some for us, too,” said Crozier. “We’re trying to move them along a little bit, they’re throwing a little bit of JV, but for the most part, Lexi’s gonna pitch most of our games. Morgan Mitchell did pitch a game for us – out of necessity – and it was one of those things where she hadn’t pitched since sixth grade, but she kept the ball in the strike zone, for the most part, and did what we wanted her to do.”

The Saints enter the tournament with a 2-5 overall record and are hoping to halt a four-game losing skid.
