Good hitting and quality pitching were both in place for the Pella baseball team, but it wasn’t quite enough Monday night, as the Little Dutch were defeated 6-4 by Newton in Pella. After the Cardinals scored two runs in the top of the first inning, Pella responded with three runs of their own to take a 3-2 lead, but seemed to pull back a bit afterward – going scoreless the next four innings. Newton, meanwhile, added three runs in the fourth inning to take a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the night.
The Little Dutch finished with 11 hits, helping support starting pitcher Jacob DeWaard, who allowed nine hits and two walks, while striking out seven batters in 6 1/3 innings of work.
“We played a pretty solid game. Jacob DeWaard gave us a chance on the mound and we did a great job of hitting the ball,” said Pella High head coach Al Vasher. “Their first pitcher did a good job of battling out of jams and we did push runners across early in the game when we had a chance. We got three runs in the first and relaxed a little bit. I think the kids did a great job and we just needed a few more timely hits.”
At the plate, Pella was led by Daniel Langenfeld, who went 2-for-3 with a home run. Paul Anderson also went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Schyler Kane and Ryan Shull each went 2-for-4 at the dish. The Little Dutch are now 11-9 overall and 6-5 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. They’ll host a league doubleheader on Wednesday against Oskaloosa.
