Eight hits and relatively steady defense was good – just not good enough – for the Pella Christian baseball team Friday night in a 6-4 loss to Oskaloosa. Eagles’ head coach Brad Rolffs said the game was a prime example of something the team is trying to work on right now – depth at pitching.

“Right now, Will VandeVoort and Andrew VanderHart are really looking good for us on the mound in the conference starting spots. They’ve been putting some good outings together,” said Rolffs. “It’s kind of the number three, four and five guys that we’re still searching to find. We’re going to give a lot of guys some chances and see who rises to the top.”

Starter Josh VanGorp allowed three runs in two innings of work; striking out two and granting a pair of walks. Jordan Rossler finished the final five innings, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out four and walking three. He also helped his cause at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and scoring a run.

The Pella Christian baseball team is now 5-7 overall and 1-5 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. They’ll rest up for a big stretch of eight games next week that starts on Monday with a doubleheader against Pella High.
