The only varsity-level action on the diamond takes place in Melcher-Dallas tonight, as the Saints host Marion County rival Twin Cedars in softball and baseball. The Sabers baseball team will try and stay atop the Bluegrass Conference, as they put their 6-0 league mark (and 11-6 overall record) up against a 3-8 Saints team that is 2-6 in the conference and coming off of a gut-wrenching 16-15 loss to Lamoni Wednesday night. Twin Cedars won the first meeting handily in a 15-0 victory in Bussey.

The softball match-up between the Saints and Sabers also expects to be dramatic, as Melcher-Dallas tries to beat Twin Cedars for the second time this season. Saints’ head coach Jim Crozier says his team needs an improved offensive effort to be successful.

“We’ve definitely got to start hitting the ball better than we have in the last two games. I mean [we’ve played] 19 innings in the last two games. We’ve had two runs in 19 innings – had three hits against Lamoni and seven hits against Moulton-Udell,” said Crozier. “We really have to hit the ball better, score more runs, [and] be more aggressive at the plate.”

The Saints edged the Sabers 7-6 on May 24th. Twin Cedars’ head coach Zack Dunkin says his team also needs to concentrate on what they do at the plate.

“Lexi Crozier – the pitcher for the Saints – in the past has nibbled away on the outside corner with us, and kind of gone off the corner further out and further out, and she does a really good job of keeping us off balance, in that regard,” said Dunkin. “We have to be patient and make sure we’re swinging at our pitches and working the count.”

The Melcher-Dallas softball team is 9-10 overall and 6-2 in the Bluegrass Conference after last night’s loss to Lamoni; while Twin Cedars is 11-6 and a perfect 6-0 in the league.
