PCM certainly kept things interesting in their 4-3 victory over Interstate-35 Saturday night in the Class 2A District Baseball Finals.
The Mustangs notched a run in the first and fifth innings, and two more in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh and then surrendered three runs before the final out. In all, PCM tallied five hits and left ten runners on base, but it was the five Mustang errors that continued to leave I-35 with options throughout the game.
PCM was buoyed by the offensive and defensive efforts of Hutch Burns. On the mound, the senior pitcher allowed just four hits, two walks and two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings of work; while retiring six Roadrunner batters. Alex DeWitte came in to pitch the final two outs. At the plate, Burns was the only Mustang with multiple hits – tallying a pair of singles – while teammate Bo Clymer pushed home all four of PCM’s runs on a 1-for-4 night offensively.
The second consecutive one-run victory lands the Mustangs in Tuesday’s Class 2A Substate Final; where they’ll face Ogden at Dowling Catholic High School in Des Moines.
