A formidable roadblock stands in the way of the Twin Cedars baseball team reaching the State Tournament, as the Sabers take on Martensdale-St. Mary’s tonight in a Class 1A Substate Final. The Blue Devils are the two-time defending State Champion, and after having a near-record breaking win streak snapped, still enter tonight’s game with a gaudy 36-5 record.

Still, Twin Cedars has put together some of their own impressive performances – having steamrolled the competition by a combined 40-2 through three games in the District Tournament. A key to the Sabers’ postseason success has been productivity out of the bottom of the batting order, and junior Levi Jones has been a big part of that.

“We tried to set our lineup up so that we don’t have any lag at the bottom of the lineup, and he’s [Jones] done a great job for us,” said Twin Cedars’ head coach Matt Miller.

“He’s a kid that we ask just to put the ball in play and use his speed to find ways to get on [base], and throughout this summer he’s done a good job with that. Once he gets on base, we can be very aggressive with him. He’s a good base runner – reads the ball off the bat very well – and sometimes it’s just easy to take someone like that for granted. He does a great job, and when he’s on base, we win games.”

Jones was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base in Twin Cedars’ 14-0 win over Sigourney in Saturday’s District Final. The Sabers will need every player to be at the top of their game tonight if they hope to extend their season and find themselves at Principal Park in Des Moines.
