For the first time in recent memory, the Pella High volleyball team begins a volleyball season without a familiar, raspy voice calling out directions on drills and exercises. Longtime coach Bob Fessler stepped down from his head coaching position at the end of last season to spend more time watching his children participate in collegiate athletics, creating an opportunity for Catie Brand to take the helm of Pella High’s program.

Brand had spent three years as an assistant coach at Central College before taking some time off to start a family, and decided last year that it was time to get back on the sidelines.

“I missed the game, so I started as the JV coach last year with the Pella program,” said Brand. “When the head coaching position came open, I really evaluated where I was at with my career and with my family and decided to go for it. I’m thrilled for the opportunity to be the Pella head coach now.”

In addition to coaching experience at Central, Brand brings to Pella a wealth of experience as a championship-caliber player; having won a high school state title at Davenport North and playing on Central’s 2002 National Championship team as a freshman.
