The first high school sports competitions get underway today as the Knoxville Cross Country Squads will run in a triangular at Pine Knolls Country Club. The Panthers decided to leave the traditional season-opening Southeast Polk Invitational so they could have an extra home meet. Coach Mike Moats says this is almost like a practice meet that the runners’ times will count on their season standings. The boys are coming off a 12th place finish at state last year and return four of the six runners from that team. The girls are more of a question mark with a mix of youth and experienced runners. Moats says the kids have been working on their running all summer and hopes to see just how much with this evening’s meet. The other teams involved are Wayne and Norwalk. J-V races are set to get underway at five.
