Pella Christian got a big night on the ground out of senior Caleb Morgan and the Eagles made a statement with a 40-19 win on the road at Lynnville-Sully. Morgan finished the night with 189 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries. His first touchdown came on the Eagles’ opening drive, after they had forced a Hawks’ punt on the first possession of the game.
“It’s the opening drive – not only of the game, but of the season – so it’s a great opportunity for both schools to make a statement early in the game,” said De Ruiter. “To stop them [Lynnville-Sully] on their opening drive, get the ball back, and then we go score on our opening drive; that shifts that momentum and makes that strong statement that we’re ready to go. It could not have started any better for us tonight.”
Pella Christian also got a strong showing out of the backfield from Michael Mason, who carried the ball nine times for 93 yards and caught a six-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Colten Collins. In all, the Eagles rolled up 365 yards of total offense, while holding Lynnville-Sully to 250.
Pella Christian now prepares to put their 1-0 overall record on the line Friday night in Pella against rival PCM.
