Two days after their season debut against Johnston, the Pella Christian volleyball team took on more Class 5A competition on Saturday in a tournament at Ames.

The Lady Eagles opened strong against Urbandale, pushing the No. 5-ranked Jayhawks to a narrow 25-23 loss in the first set, before falling in game two. The effort was still there for the next match in pool play, though, as Pella Christian downed Fort Dodge in straight sets. The Lady Eagles closed out the tournament with two more ranked teams, falling 2-1 to Class 2A No. 12 IKM-Manning and 2-0 against Class 3A No. 6-ranked Nevada.

Pella Christian head coach Cindy Nikkel said the tournament provided her squad with valuable experience that will pay off later in the season, and also allowed the team to try some new rotations. The team is off for the entire upcoming week before returning to competition after Labor Day against Marshalltown.
