Pleasantville head baseball coach Sheldon Card has a hard time peeling himself away from the game – but fortunately for him, he hasn’t had to this season. Even though the Trojans’ season ended over two weeks ago, Card gets to put on his coaching cap for a few more days for a senior all-star series that begins today in Clinton, Iowa.

Earlier this season, Coach Card was chosen by his peers to lead a team of top-tier seniors for a four-day farewell tour of sorts.

“In the football sense of it, it’s the ‘Shrine Bowl’ of baseball. I’ll be fortunate enough to coach 16 of the best seniors in the state of Iowa,” said Card.

“It’s just awesome for me to be able to do that. Any time you can take a little family vacation where the whole thing is revolved around baseball – obviously that’s a positive for me too. It’s going to be fun. It’s going to be exciting – going to be rewarding. I can’t wait to meet some of these kids, [and] we’re gonna go have a lot of fun for four days.”

The games run today through Sunday and will see Card lead his “Small Schools-East” squad – comprised of top seniors from Class 1A to 3A – against a similar team from the western side of the state; but will also pit those schools against a pair of 4A all-star squads as well. The teams each play each other once, setting up a championship and consolation game to close out the tournament on Sunday.
