It was a rare mid season non district match up for Pella Christian last night, but the same result as the Eagles rolled to a 33-13 win over Sigourney Keota to move to 5-0 on the season.
It was a shootout early on, as The Eagles scored on their opening drive to take a 6-0 lead, but just seconds later, Sigourney Keota’s Kolton Greiner answered with an 89 yard kickoff return putting the Cobras in front 7-6 . Pella Christian then drove 64 yards to re gain the lead with just over six minutes remaining in the first quarter. Both defenses then tightened up and no one would score again as Pella Christian took a 13-7 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter Colton Collins connected with Blake Riggen for the duo’s second touchdown as the Eagles stretched the lead to 20-7 . Sigourney Keota got their offense rolling midway through the third quarter and continued an impressive drive into the fourth quarter with a chance to steal the momentum and cut it to a one score game with a first and goal at the two yard line. However, a five yard false start penalty, and back to back to back tackles for loss by the Eagles defense gave the ball back to Pella Christian. From there the Eagles erased any doubt scoring twice in :15 as Derek Van Kooten broke loose for a 76 yard touchdown run, then Riley Stursma intercepted Luke Lyle and took it back 27 yards putting the Eagles in control for good.

Despite not having either of their top two rushers, Caleb Morgan and Michael Mason, the Eagles still racked up 397 total yards including another impressive ground attack that produced 269 yards led by Van Kooten who carried 12 times for 214 yards and two touchdowns. Colton Collins was impressive through the air as well completing 10 of 19 passes for 128 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions while Riggen was the leading receiver with three catches for 55 yards and two scores. Zach Van Zee led the defense with an impressive 15 tackles while Alex Van Maanen returned to the lineup and contributed 10 stops. Pella Christian improved to 5-0 overall and will return to district play at Ogden next week.
