A penalty filled game turned into a gut-wrenching 23-21 loss to Winterset by the Knoxville Football Squad last night. Both teams struggled with the yellow laundry on the field as a combined 24 penalties for 245 yards got both teams out of rhythm. After a Winterset field goal in the first quarter the Panthers took a 14-3 lead on Colton Spaur’s two yard run and Ross Shelford’s eight yard pass reception, however the Huskies would score just before the half time break and they seemed to turn the momentum. Winterset came out and put together an 85 yard eight minute drive to start the second half to take the lead 17-10, however Knoxville got back in the lead when Ryan Douglas hauled in a 44 yard touchdown grab from Gerrit Davis, but with 50 seconds remaining, Winterset notched the final score to make it 23-21. Coach Troy Rider said one key besides the penalties, was that Winterset was the first opponent to run the ball effectively against the Panthers. Colton Spaur ran for 123 yards last night on 23 carriers while Gerrit Davis was 12/18 for 196 yards in the air, Ryan Douglas led the Panthers receiving corps with 83 yards on three receptions. The Panthers allowed 141 yards rushing, by far the most of any game this season. Knoxville is now 2-1 on the season and will travel to Pella next Friday.
