Central College senior running back Ross Doehrmann of Williamsburg is one of 147 semifinalists for the National Football Foundation’s National Scholar-Athlete Award. It’s no small feat to qualify for the award; students must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, have outstanding football ability as a first-team player, and demonstrate strong leadership and citizenship. On the field, Doehrmann has rushed for 1,228 yards on 274 attempts entering the 2012 season. In the classroom, the Williamsburg native sports a 3.87 GPA with a biology major. A committee comprised of nationally recognized media, college football hall of famers and athletics administrators, will choose up to 16 award winners to receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship and compete for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which determines “the best of the best” in football scholar-athletes in the nation. The finalists are announced October 25 and will travel to New York City December 4th, where the Campbell Trophy winner will be announced. Past Campbell Trophy winners include Peyton Manning and Tim Tebow.
