Fall Leaf Colors

The leaves have been turning vibrant shades of yellow and red this fall. Central College Professor Paul Weihe says that the drought doesn’t have a big impact on leaf color as long as the trees are mildly healthy. He says the process behind the color change happens when the chloroform breaks down leaving a yellow leaf, and other chemicals building up, which cause red leaves. The vibrancy of the colors is affected by day to day weather. Weihe says that if the temperatures cool slowly the leaves will last on the trees a lot long and will change to brighter or deeper colors.
