The first presidential debate was held last night. The focus of the debate was on domestic policy. Central College professor of Political Science Andrew Green says that Mitt Romney performed well in the debate, being very active, articulate, and showing a solid grasp of the issues. Green says President Obama was less active in the debate, but thats common for incumbents who are ahead in the polls. Green says Obama relied on his current status as President, and talked mostly about his accomplishments in the current term, without laying out a domestic policy agenda for the next 4 years. Psychology Professor Randall Renstrom says that Obama pulled his punches, not bringing up Mitt Romney’s work at Bain Capital and his “47%” comments. He says challengers often outperform incumbents in the first debate, and is interested to see how much the polls tighten in the coming week.
