Boil Advisory in Attica

Pershing Utilities has informed KNIA/KRLS that a water main break has caused a boil advisory for their customers in Attica. The boil order will remain in place until tests show that the water is clear. Water main breaks decrease water pressure. That increases the likelihood that contaminants like bacteria are able to enter the water stream. As a precaution, the city of Attica and the DNR advise residents to boil their water until test results show water is safe to drink.
Bring all water to a boil; let it boil for one minute. Let it cool before using. Use boiled or bottled water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation. Untreated water can be used for bathing and similar purposes.
Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. Bacteria in the water may pose greater health risks for infants, young children, some of the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. Cory Frank, with Marion County Public Health recommends that infants and children in particular should drink only bottled water until the system clears.
Call the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791 for more information.
The city will repair the water line, flush the water in the system and then collect water samples to test for bacteria. After water samples test clean for bacteria, the city will lift the boil advisory.
KNIA/KRLS News will provide more information as it becomes official.
