After a long off-season, both the Central Men’s and Women’s basketball teams will be hitting the court at home tonight for their first regular season game. Both teams will have relatively fresh faces as far as head coaches are concerned. On the men’s side, Craig Douma will be coaching his first Dutch game on the sidelines in his rookie year for Central against visiting Monmouth College. Though the Dutch men won’t have a lot of returning faces on the court this season, Douma’s hopes and expectations are high, as he and his team will have something to prove in their opening game. Coach Douma tells KNIA/KRLS Sports that the key to tonight’s game will be how physical his team is on defense from every position on the court.
On the women’s side, head coach Mike Jacobsma is in his “sophomore” year of coaching, and his squad will be facing Grinnell to begin the men’s/women’s doubleheader tonight. Last year, his women’s team led the Iowa Conference in rebounding, even with the lack of height under the basket. For their season opener against visiting Grinnell, a big key to victory tonight will be continuing that trend.
The tip-off for the women’s game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. tonight, and the men will start at 8:00 p.m.
